An Optional Double-Point
ALSA Show
January 25 - 27, 2008
Jackson County Fairgrounds
& EXPO Park
Central Point, Oregon
|
The Board of Directors of Llama Quest invites you to join us for the seventh annual Hobo Classic optional double-point ALSA show. Exhibitors will be able to designate double or single (point) and which judge(s) they wish to show under.
Because of the time of year and general weather conditions, this show will again be unique-NO CLEAN LLAMAS ARE ALLOWED. Llama Quest hereby sets forth the rules:
Llamas that are declared clean by the HOBO Cops will be sprinkled liberally with straw and will be sent to jail. There will be a $10 fine to get out of jail.
There will be a $5 fine for anyone caught bringing a blower onto the fairgrounds.
There will be a $5 fine for anyone caught with a brush, a comb, or a wand.
There will be various signs and posters declaring certain actions illegal. For example: It is illegal for a llama or alpaca to relieve itself in the show ring. A $1 fine will be levied to anyone violating the signs. It is recommended that each exhibitor bring along a supply of $1 bills unless jail time is desired.
There will be highly trained HOBO cops empowered with the right to levy fines as they see fit. Anyone refusing to pay his or her fines will go straight to jail.
Absolutely no show clothes are allowed. Youth wishing to participate in showmanship class are required by law to wear a hobo costume (llama costumes are optional in showmanship class but not in costume class). Judges have promised not to judge on cleanliness in any class (exhibitors may shower PLEASE). Accepted clothing is hobo costume, barn attire or business-grubby. Components for costumes may be purchased at the HOBO Town Thrift Shop and Yard Sale.
At the end of each class, the judges will choose the dirtiest llama. These llamas will compete at the end of the show for Grand and Reserve Champion "Pasture Magnet". A befitting prize will be awarded as well as a ribbon. This is an exercise in self-control for compulsive herd managers.
There will be no ranch displays at the stalls. If participants wish, they may have a 10x10 space on the indoor concourse (no pens and no llamas) for $35. Hobo themes are recommended but not required.
By popular request again this year there will be a maiden Obstacle class and a maiden Public Relations class on Friday evening to be preceded by costume classes for both youth and adults (all themes welcome). These classes are not point classes (neither single nor double). The cost of the maiden performance classes and the costume classes is $ 5 per entry. There will be ribbons to 5th place and a $100 first place prize for each of the above classes. Maiden classes are for llamas/alpacas that have never competed on an ALSA performance course. We encourage everyone who has never participated in performance classes to give it a try and have some fun. The "Canine Caper" dog custume class is new this year and is on Friday evening--there is no charge to enter this class.
The OTH ("Over the Hill") performance division, Performance Play Day (all day on Sunday), and the "Mother Hildegard Sunshine of the Rock Award" will also, by popular demand, be part of this year's activities.
The Championship Challenge Cup again offered this year is a non-ALSA class for individuals (adults or youth) whose llama/alpaca has won a Grand or Reserve Champion Performance title in either of the ALSA Novice, Open, Advanced, Senior/Intermediate/Junior Youth or the HOBO OTH divisions. There will be two courses laid out and each participant must run both courses. The points earned on both courses will be totaled to determine the placements. Two judges will be used and their respective score sheets will be cumulative (i.e., each participant's total score will consist of judge A's score on courses 1 & 2 added to judge B's score on courses 1 & 2). There will be ribbons to 5th place and a $250 first place premium, a $150 second place premium and a $100 third place premium.
The Performance Play Day will take place Sunday in the performance ring. There will be a $5 charge per llama/alpaca to use the course. Each participant may take their llama/alpaca through the course as many times as they desire. Experts in performance will be available and on-course to provide helpful hints and suggestions.
The "Mother Hildegard Sunshine of the Rock Award" will have similar ground rules to the LANA Youth Award but will be awarded to a deserving adult.
We will again offer this year:
Versatility Grand Champion--may be awarded to any llama or alpaca (male, female or gelding) who show overall excellence by placing well in numerous show events. To be eligible, an animal must be entered and shown in both the halter and performance (novice, advanced or OTH-obstacle, pack and PR) divisions. Points will be earned based on the ALSA Point Chart. The animal with the highest accumulated point total from all halter and performance events entered and shown wins (ribbon and trophy).
We invite you also to attend the HOBO HULLABALOO that will take place in HOBO JUNCTION immediately following the Saturday show schedule. There will be much fun and a camp-out style evening meal served from our soup kitchen.
Again this year we will have the HOBO Town Pawn Shop. All those wishing to participate should bring with them a "white elephant" item which they will pawn at the Pawn Shop and receive a claim check. During the Saturday night HOBO Hullabaloo you may use your pawn claim check to redeem any item of choice from the Pawn Shop.
Again this year we will have a "silent auction" to benefit the youth. We very much appreciate those who might wish to bring items to donate to the silent auction.
We reserve the right to make up rules as we go along. Come and have lots of fun with very little effort.
If anyone has any great ideas for further "events" please contact Dan Milton (541-899-8097).

The Alpaca and Llama Show Association, Inc. (ALSA) approved this show. All rules and guidelines will be in accordance with the 14th Edition ALSA Handbook.
Show Rules
Exhibitors must be the registered owners and make entry in the exact names (owner and animal) as shown on the registration certificate. Exception: Exhibitors may use the "Permission to Show" form provided by ALSA which grants permission from the owner on the Registration Certificate to a person who is purchasing an animal to show that animal under their own name. Exhibitors may or may not be handlers.
Halter Classes:
All llamas shall be present for judging with a halter and lead rope with no additional decorations. Halters shall not have tassels, pompoms or other removable decorations.
No ranch, personal, animal, organizational name, logo, or insignia shall be displayed on the exhibitor or animal during the class.
Nursing llamas cannot be accompanied in the ring by their babies or vice versa except for the Dam & Cria class. ALSA recommends not showing nursing mothers or babies.
A Judge may dismiss animals exhibiting unruly or unsafe behavior from the ring. Dismissal can take place even before the animal gets in the ring if show personnel bring the matter to a Judge's attention.
Show management may dismiss an exhibitor and their animal from participation at the show if the exhibitor mistreats their animal.
Llamas may not be moved from one class to another after halter judging has begun, except at the Judge's discretion.
Youth 8 years through 12 years of age shall not be permitted to show intact males over 24 months of age.
NOTE: Handler attire should be appropriate for the class. Shoes should be appropriate for the showring (open toed shoes, sandals, and bare feet will disqualify the exhibitor). Not to mention, subject them to frostbite!
Exhibitors are responsible for having their animal on time for showing. Classes will start as soon as previous class winners are announced and dismissed.
An exhibitor shall not knowingly show where there is a conflict of interest with the Judge; the burden of responsibility is with the owner, exhibitor or trainer to recognize a conflict of interest. (See ALSA Handbook 14th Edition).
Performance Classes:
Halter class rules also apply.
Llamas must make an attempt at each obstacle.
In adult classes, llamas must make one attempt at each obstacle. If obstacle is not completed, they should be judged accordingly and then go on to the next obstacle.
A llama or handler going off-course cannot place over an animal that completed the course.
Coaching from the sidelines by spectators is discouraged and may compromise the exhibitor's scoring.
After refusals at three obstacles, it will then be mandatory for the Judge to dismiss the exhibitor from the course. This procedure is not to be used in Youth classes without prior agreement of show management and explanation to the exhibitors.
In obstacle classes, it is at the Judges discretion whether the handler must negotiate the obstacles.
Only voice and hand commands may be used in performance classes.
No written notes may be used in performance classes.
In all packing classes, the handler and the animal must negotiate the obstacles, except loading in vehicles, and any obstacle wherein a separate handler route has been defined or provided.
Exhibitors may request the Judge provide a review of their individual score cards. Score cards may not be reviewed without the permission of the Judge. All score sheets should remain property of the Judge and only interpreted by the Judge with exhibitors on an individual basis.
Exhibitors may not view other exhibitor's score cards.
HALTER CLASSES:
Breeding Llamas
Wool Divisions:
Suri Wool
|
Suri llamas have a natural balanced, athletic type which may appear more narrow than llamas of other fiber types when viewed from the front or rear aspect. The fleece of a Suri Llama should have a natural luster and hang and drape over the llama's body, usually forming a natural part along the spine. The fibers are grouped into a very distinctive and well-defined lock structure, which is indicated by the many individual separate locks of fiber formed at the skin and carrying out to the ends of each lock. The fleece should be lustrous, the locks independent and consistent in size, and the degree of wave or spiral content throughout the neck and body. The fiber is also characterized by absence of crimp and minimal loft. Llamas that meet the Suri Wool description must be shown in suri classes.
